In the U.S., the Super Bowl is one of the biggest food days of the year — essentially another holiday centered around eating.
But most traditional game-day foods tend to be greasier and spicier than what many sensitive guts (and honestly, most guts) tolerate particularly well.
So I thought I’d share a shortlist of snack ideas that people with IBD may actually look forward to — not just this Sunday but for any food-focused gathering.
When choosing gentler snacks, I typically recommend leaning toward foods that are lower in roughage, moderately seasoned, and not too fatty — especially if symptoms are a concern.
Food-centered events can be stressful, but with a little planning, most people can find options that allow them to participate comfortably.
Here are a few ideas to consider:
Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce
Can also be made with almond butter if preferred.
Deviled Eggs
Avocado-based mayo, a half-mayo/half-Greek-yogurt mix, or mashed avocado can be used in place of some or all of the mayo.
Warm Roasted Vegetable Platter with Dip
Cooking vegetables can make them easier to digest while still delivering great flavor. Swap whipped feta for classic hummus or roasted eggplant dip if preferred.
Guacamole
Easy to adjust based on tolerance — keep the heat mild, skip onion and garlic if needed, or simply mash avocado with salt and lime. Serve with organic corn chips.
Greek-Inspired Potato Nachos
Sliced roasted Russet potatoes stand in for chips — a satisfying, whole-food option that’s lower in fat and offers gentle fiber.
Sourdough Crostini with Toppings of Choice
Often better tolerated than other breads and pairs well with many toppings. Think pesto with whipped ricotta, olive tapenade, or cheddar with peeled apple.
